Expansion and consolidation of specific knowledge in the field of contemporary history by examination of new and uncommon topics, taking into account current tendencies and controversies of research, applying scientific skills (methods and working techniques) and linking with basic content, development of skills for the independent formulation of historical questions.

At the beginning of World War I aircrafts were used only in supporting roles, i.e. especially as unarmed reconnaissance. The very rapid technological development in the years 1915 and 1916 brought about that fighters, bombers and reconnaissance/surveillance aircrafts emerged as new types. During the seminar the most successful fighter pilots of all combatants are biographically investigated – beginning with Manfred von Richthofen and Billy Bishop to Erwin Bönsch. Austria-Hungary itself had 49 flying aces, who were pilots with five or more victories!

Besides the presentation of the most successful fighter pilots from Austria-Hungary, the German Reich, Italy, France, Belgium, the UK, the US and Russia, the seminar also serves as part of the preparation for an excursion to the Trentino and the Friuli on the history of the air war on the Tyrolean and the Piave (Italy) front during the First World War. Participants in this seminar will be preferably accepted to the excursion in May 2017.
