Learning Outcome

Based on the reflection of their own reading experiences and socialization, the students are invited to deal with current questions of teaching reading skills and literature. Studies on reading habits of children and youngsters serve as the basis for introducing and developing models and methods for a motivating training of reading skills and literature.

Introduction: participants reflect on their own reading experiences, socialization and habits: what aspects have influenced their attitude towards reading in general? What role do the German lessons and the teacher in school play?

How to teach reading skills: critical discussion and analysis of the results of the PISA studies; what are the requirements of the curriculum and the educational standards as regards reading skills? Reading and the new media; possibilities and strategies to improve reading competences; skimming and scanning, deep reading, procedures of loud-reading and quantitative reading;  elaborating reading strategies, methods to take in information from non-fictional texts etc.

Didactic aspects of teaching literature: what are the requirements of the curriculum and the educational standards?
