• Competence to find ways of bringing English as a lingua franca into the classroom
• Awareness of intercultural function of English as an International Lingua Franca and
• Ability to facilitate intercultural communication skills as part of the English language class
• Develop classroom activities which consider the role of English as a Lingua Franca

English as a lingua franca is the most widespread use of English in Europe and worldwide. Most of our students use English to communicate with non-native speakers of English in lingua franca contexts. There are estimates that about 80 percent of verbal exchanges in which English is used as a second language do not involve any native speakers of English. What does this mean for how we teach English in the classroom? Can we bring the world’s lingua franca into the classroom, and if yes how? This course aims to give you an overview of current research perspectives on teaching English as a lingua franca. We are going to look at what we can currently do to take these research findings into account and to discuss potentially radical ways in which our curricula and teaching may change in the future. There will be activities for creating cultural awareness and cross-cultural communication skills in the ELF classroom that take into account the cross-cultural nature of English as a lingua franca. There will also be opportunities for you to design your own ELF relevant activities and lesson plans.
