641102 Reception: Plato's Timaeus and ist reception in Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 07.03.2017 | Place course on memo listOn successful completion of this course, students should be able to trace the fundamental lines of the literary and philosophical content of Plato's Timaeus. They should also be able to trace the reception in Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
The Timaeus was not only the most read and discussed among Plato's works, it was also the dialogue which most affected the systematisation of Platonic thought and its reception over the centuries. Due to its role in the foundation of ancient cosmology and philosophy of nature, this dialogue was commented on and interpreted not only by philosophers, but also by physicians, astronomers and even writers of music theory. This course will present an overview of its reception from Hellenism to the exegesis of Timaeus in the School of Chartres, then focusing mainly on Marsilio Ficino and Renaissance interpretations.
Combination of lectures and discussion on literary sources with students
Written exam in English, German or Italian (student’s choice). The translation of latin texts is obligatory.
