645110 Modern Times: Courts and Cabinets of Curiosities in the Late Renaissance - Research Seminar
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 30.09.2016 | Place course on memo listExpanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture.
Especially at the courts of late Renaissance the coeval globalisation, an altered form of “appropriation of the world”, left its marks. Since the beginning of the 16thcentury there are not only numerous antiquarian and other strange objects but also such from other continents – the “indianische sachen” – in the European cabinets of curiosities. Artificialia and Naturalia as well as new technical instrumentals give an encyclopaedical insight into collecting strategies.
The transfer and exchange took place via diplomatic and dynastical relationships, but also via art market. Modified and increased perception appeared in everyday life and especially in representation as the (public) festive culture, thus the clothing, furnishing and performance. In the course we will interpret this material culture in art historical and historical approach, moreover we write texts about this “objects” and share them on a website. For this purpose we also read some archival texts. The court of Ferdinand II of Tyrol (†1595) serves as case study and for comparison. An exhibition in Ambras Castle in the year 2017 is the occasion for the research seminar.
Preparatory phase, presentations and discussions, group work incl. reading of (source) texts, written work, field trip.
This course is assessed via continuous assessment and attendance is compulsory, written and oral presentations, short website text.
