Students are able to investigate microbiota of different habitats and microbial activities during biological degradation of natural materials with DNA and RNA -based methods. They are able to plan and conduct experiments and interpret the results with respect to classic microbiological methodology.

- Introduction and history of microbial ecology. Molecular approaches

- Isolation of nucleic acids from environmental samples

- Application of PCR in microbial ecology

- 16S rRNA gene and clone library approach and sequencing

- DNA fingerprinting of microbial communities 1

- DNA fingerprinting of microbial communities 2

- Real-time PCR

- Nucleic acid hybridisation

- FISH

- Microarrays

- Stable isotope probing

- Analysis of functional genes

- Microbial ecology and genomics

- Metagenomics and Next generation sequencing
