718787 Biodegradation
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 21.09.2016 | Place course on memo listStudents will be able to investigate both the microbial composition and activities of different habitats during the biological degradation of natural materials with DNA-based methods. In addition, they will be able to plan and conduct experiments and present and interpret the results.
This course will focus on the biodegradation of various materials along with their influence in the ecosystem functionality. Moreover, the course will suit not only microbiologists but also ecologists. Several tests to evaluate the degradation of different materials as well as the microorganisms involved in the process will be characterised using molecular techniques (qPCR, DGGE).
qPCR; DGGE; MicroRespTM, physicochemical properties (pH, electrical conductivity, volatile solids ...); and statistical data analysis by using multivariate approaches.
Laboratory participation, teamwork, final data presentation, protocol (individual), introductory test at the beginning of the course (in order to check that the students look through the protocol).
Will be uploaded in OLAT
