930008 Gender, ethnicity and language
winter semester 2016/2017 | Last update: 31.05.2017 | Place course on memo list
The students are aware of the different perspectives on the interrelation of language, racism and gender. They have a basic knowledge about the respective theories of intersectionality and interdependence and about forms and conditions of verbal discrimination.
We discuss - under the perspective of its application - the issue whether and to which extent language is an important tool for structural discrimination. We take examples of racism and sexism in language and analyze their respective verbal forms of realization. In a second step we work on different ways of interventions with verbal discrimination, their appliability, their conditions and actual transferability.
Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).
The students have to develop and try out non-discriminating verbal strategies of intervention; presentation in the course and a written final reflection.
