The study of catholic theology serves not only the formation of priests, laity theologians, and religious teachers. Rather, theology at state faculties also plays an important role in scientific discussion and discourse with other disciplines. In recent years there have been major developments both in terms of the study of theology at state universities as well as in priest education. Thus the curricula are always subject to change. Also, the Congregation for the Clergy in December 2016 has published a new basic fundament for priest education. The doctoral students' seminar addresses the state and ecclesiastical frameworks for the theological faculties and universities as well as the theological studies. It directs the view of new developments and wishes to a future orientation. The German-speaking area as well as the world church view are addressed.
