Students are able to identify and evaluate fundamental structures, processes, developments and

trends of the various media systems, country-specific communication cultures and their

influence on public opinion. Using various theoretical approaches, students can analyze factors

that alter communication systems. Moreover, they can connect political-cultural attitudes to

country-specific patterns and various communication practices.

This lecture will focus on the various structures of European media systems and their impact on the formation of country specific patterns of public opinion. Starting with the three models of media and politics (Hallin und Mancini) the first part of the lecture provides an overview about the transformation of European political communication. The second part deals with select indicators of political cultural attitudes and discusses linkages between communication structures and country specific patterns of public opinion and political communication.
