Students are able to identify and evaluate fundamental structures, processes, developments and

trends of the various media systems, country-specific communication cultures and their

influence on public opinion. Using various theoretical approaches, students can analyze factors

that alter communication systems. Moreover, they can connect political-cultural attitudes to

country-specific patterns and various communication practices.

Trends and practices in European political communication vary from country to country. In this seminar, the participants should analyse two European media systems of their choice and assess their political communication practices. The focus will be on the central symbols of individual countries within the European general public opinion. Within this research on national symbols in the context of the European public space, the analytical focus will lie on the differing country-specific communication styles within the country’s media structures, its political communication culture as well as its opinion-forming processes.
