Students acquire the ability to reproduce the essential theoretical approaches of interpretative sociology and to explain their basic terminology. Moreover, they know how to describe current topic areas and research perspectives of cultural social analyses. They are able to critically discuss constructions of identity in the context of social relationships of misjudgement and recognition based on sociological identity theories and theoretical impulses from related fields. They know how to identify and authentically reproduce central theses and lines of reasoning. Moreover, they are able to apply theoretical concepts to empirical phenomena.

This seminar delves into the problem of social relations and conditions of symbolic recognition and misrecognition introduced in the lecture. It will concentrate on critical reading of Sighard Neckel’s Status und Scham. Zur symbolischen Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheit. The seminar will highlight sociological perspectives on the problem of shame (e.g. Simmel, Elias, Sennett) against the background of philosophical, social theoretical, cultural anthropological and historical approaches. What social meanings and functions does shame assume? What roles do shame and shaming play for social control and for the reproduction of social structure and social inequality? What causes shame and in what (type of) situations does shame arise? What social norms and power relations does it imply? How do people get caught in negative senses of self-worth and schemes of interpretation that tend to help reproduce relations of inequality?

Presentations, group work and group discussions.
