At the end of the course, students will be able to analyze complex speech acts (focus: marketing), process pertinent data, and transfer their knowledge into successful communication and action patterns in English. The specific skills that will be trained include (self-)positioning, the analysis of target-specific communication, the reformulation of product characteristics as customer benefits, various promotion methods and implementation patterns, as well as negotiation and sales skills. Special attention will be paid to the ability to select those communication patterns that promise success in an intercultural context.
The most important chapters comprise: * goal-setting and self-positioning through a marketing approach * formulating a marketing mix in English * analyzing and applying target-specific means of communication and methods * different promotion methods and implementation patterns (language of advertising, PR, press, sponsoring, etc.) * product descriptions (re-formulating product features as customer benefits) * sales methods, especially closing a sale * working out a realistic project in all aspects of (marketing) communication .
Students are systematically integrated into communication situations in business and learn to improve and refine their English language skills in authentic contexts. They have the possibility to measure and evaluate their individual learning progress through personal goal-setting. Active participation in class is regarded as the most central aspect and is achieved through discussions, presentations, group work, moderated meetings, simulations and case studies which are worked out in small teams. In-class participation is supplemented by structured self-study assignments. In this respect, the internet represents an important tool for improving individual deficiencies in language competence, acquiring new information, and creating the theoretical foundations of communication skills. An internet link collection compiled by the students (including summaries and the evaluation of relevant sites and podcasts) is made available via eCampus and results in an internet collection for course-related topics and training sites.
The student's ongoing participation in class, one more extensive written project assignment, as well as the annotated link collection will be used to assess the student's performance. Regular attendance is required.
Tailor-made course materials will be handed out at the beginning of the course In the course of the semester, participants will produce their own "Internet Reading Manual"
