In this semester, the topic is the multimodal nature of spoken language. When we speak, we do not just produce sounds to convey our message: our movements, body posture, gaze behavior etc. contribute to communication as well.
In this seminar, we will focus on gesturem i.e. the movements we make while speaking and that play a role for communication. Among other things, we will discuss the following issues:´
- what is gesture? Which kinds of gestures are there?
- methodology of gesture studies, introduction to video annotation
- what and how does gesture contribute to communication?
- how does gesture interact with the verbal layer of expression?
