Students are able to name interrelations of literary and cultural history with the example of representative authors, works, and genres. They are able to describe the processes of canonisation and reception. They can outline the interactions developments in society, literature and cultural history (e.g. gender-specific developments) and are able to independently analyse and interpret literary texts based on scientific standards.

Not only G. Hauptmann’s “De Waber”/“Die Weber”, but also many other texts that were later considered highlights of the German-language literary history were published in only two years: in 1891 and 1892. Although written and published at the same time, they are usually assigned to different literary epochs and movements: whereas literary historians consider the novel “Stopfkuchen” by W. Raabe, Th. Fontane’s novel “Frau Jenny Treibel”, and P. Heyse’s “Merlin” as core texts of the Realism, G. Hauptmann’s “De Waber” was later considered an important text of Naturalism, S. George’s “Blätter für die Kunst” are often said to be the highlight of German Symbolism. The drama “Gestern” by Hofmannsthal and the novellas by H. Bahr, both published as well in 1891, are seminal for the early Fin de Siècle. Wedekind’s tragedy “Frühlings Erwachen” is considered as text of the Impressionism, as well as R. Dehmel’s poems “Erlösung” as texts of the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau).

Young writers, most programmatically Bahr (e.g. with his polemic text “Die Überwindung des Naturalismus”) attack the established poets and break the rules of the dominating poetics. In the perspective of literary history, several literary epochs and movements seem to collide in these years. In this seminar, we will become acquainted with this synchrony of literary epochs and schools that are usually treated consecutively.
