You will learn to deal with the interrelations and development of selected aspects of literature and cultural history (Pop-Literature) and You will acquire the ability to analyse literary texts with scientific methods.

Pop-Literature became in the meanwhile a canonical object of literary research. By dealing with pop-literature we will not only focus literary history of the 1990s but also the modern/postmodern constellation since the 1920s until today. In the second half of the seminar we will read two ‘classics’ of pop-literature: Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre’s Soloalbum and Christian Kracht’s Faserland.

We will discuss the texts against the background of a profound understanding of pop-culture (not popular culture), i.e. it is not sufficient to regard the genre as literature, but also as a cultural phenomenon. So we will deal with historical semantics and cultural theories of pop and pop-culture. Therefore it is necessary to read some short but difficult theoretical texts (e.g. Thomas Hecken, Jochen Venus, Niels Werber). We will also focus examples for iconic signs of pop-and youth-culture.

We will look into the novels by a close reading and use different methods of literary research that allow a close look at the novels as such. Furthermore we will read texts on cultural theory and we will discuss the novels against the background of these texts.
