Students are able to name interrelations of literary and cultural history with the example of representative authors, works and genres, especially from the 18th to the middle of the 19 th century. They are able to describe the processes of canonisation and reception. They can outline the interactions developments in society, literature and cultural history (e.g. gender-specific developments) and are able to independently analyse and interpret literary texts based on scientific standards.

The seminar focuses on texts of the early 19th century. In addition to and in in-depth treatment of the topics dealt within the lecture we will read novellas and fairytales from, among others, Clemens Brentano and E. T. A. Hoffmann. In consideration of aspects of literary history, reception history, culture and society (e.g. gender- specific aspects) we will learn independent text interpretation based on scientific principles. Narratology is our main theoretical approach.
