Students will learn to…

·       familiarise themselves with the development of Anglophone literature over time, with a special focus on comic fiction;

·       practise and master forms of literary analysis with a special focus on fiction;

·       analyse various forms of humorous expression in literature;

·       place and interpret a text in its historical context;

Stiff Upper Lip? It seems as if a very special sense of humour is not only an integral part of British every-day life, but also of British literary and cultural productions. In the course of this lecture we will try to gain an overview of the development of humorous fiction, as well as analyse various forms of comic representation in their historical context. We will deal with, among other things:

·       History of comic literature

·       Forms of comic expression

·       Literary analysis

·       Theory of comedy

·       Comic genres
