The aim of this course is to go back to the earliest beginnings of poetry, to show how structural and formal elements influenced the development of writing poetry, and how different forms of poetry have enriched the genre to this day.

We will not only analyse 'classical' English poetry by looking at rhyme, rhythm, metre, sounds etc. but also other forms of poetry including haiku, limerick, mini-saga and song lyrics. We will compare these different variations not only regarding formal aspects but also in terms of themes. In addition, we will attempt to do some creative writing, that is writing poetry.
