English Literature and Culture (with Readinglist): Shakespeare's Plays: Contexts, Theories, and Performances

Students will gain a deep understanding of the key themes addressed in Shakespeare's plays as well as an insight into their historical and cultural contexts. Students will also enhance their ability to reflect upon and discuss various approaches and research methods used to analyse Shakespeare's plays.

This lecture is designed to provide a concise overview of Shakespeare’s tragedies, comedies, and histories in the context of Early Modern culture. In addition to presenting various readings of individual plays, this lecture will provide insight into key theories, methods, and criticism in relation to Shakespeare's drama. Short excerpts from theatre productions and film adaptations will be included to discuss the political, social, and cultural impact, the great popularity, and also the timelessness of Shakespeare's plays.

 

Presentation, group work

Written exam (on British drama) and oral exam (based on the core reading list)

Positive completion of first part of studies (1. Studienabschnitt).
