At the end of the course the students will have a solid knowledge of the the basic skills and techniques needed for academic research (inkl. searching of (secondary) literature, systematization of material, academic writing etc.) and shall be able to write a (pro-)seminar paper according to the requested guidelines with regard to form and content.

Research in the library; data bases and bibliographies; structure and essential parts of a (pro-)seminar paper; correct citations and documentation of sources; how to compile a bibliography; basic principles of academic writing

Lecture parts; discussions, exercises and group work; guided library tour

There are two possibilities:

(1) various homeworks during the course (e.g. answering questions about the guided library tour, searching literature in the library, exercises on citations and bibliographies, writing an introduction and a conclusion of a mini (pro-)seminar paper)

(2) OR final exam (whose contents correspond more or less to those of the - alternative - homeworks).

The decision about the choice of one of these two alternatives has to be made at the beginning of the course (until the second lesson).

None; therefore it is recommended to attend the course already during the first (or second) semester.
