Translation and interpreting are modes of communication that operate across language and cultures. Language is thus both tool and medium of translation and interpreting. A sound understandig of the structure and function of human language on the one hand and of human communication on the other is therefore indispensable to professional translation/interpreting activity and to scientific reasoning about it.

In this course the linguistic and communicative foundations of translation/interpreting will be discussed, providing students with a practical tool for reflective and theory-based use of language.

The teacher will give lectures on each topic. Additional readings will complement the teacher's presentations. Assessment is based on a single examination at the end of the course.
