Acquaintance with

a) basic Latin vocabulary occurring in flowers of speech and quotations in present-day texts

b) elementary grammatical structures to be found frequently in such expressions and quotations

c) a certian number of more complex quotations often used by politicians, journalists, scholars etc.

Insight into lexical and grammatical structures, into the origin and today's use of Latin expressions and quotations. Emphasis, when necessary, is laid on differences between the canonical forms that quotations may have in different languages / cultures.

Starting from concrete expressions and quotations we try to understand words and elementary grammatical structures of the Latin language. 

Written exam at the end of the semester: Grammatical and semantic interpretation of frequently used Latin expressions.

Most languages / cultures are provided with language-specific collections of Latin expressions and quotations.

The target group of this course are students of Translation Studies who have no or little knowledge of Latin.
