Expanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture

This seminar concentrates on the outstanding development of mosaic art of the 12th century in Sicily. The works belong to the most important intermediator between byzantine and medieval art and reckoned at that time – as well as today – miribilia mundi. We give attention to the mosaics of the cathedral of Cefalù, the palaces of the Normans, the Cappella Palatina and the Martorona in Palermo as well as those of the dome of Monreale and the cathedral of Messina. The seminar deals with themes of history of development within the byzantine comnenic and roman style, iconographical and iconological analysis of single themes of illustration, but also of large programmes (that belong to the most important ones of the Hight Middle Ages) and their positioning and arrangement in the architectural fabric, as well as functional and receptional aspects. The seminar also serves as preparation for the Excursion to Sicily that takes place in summer term 2017.
