Expanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture.

The self-portrait is among the most expressive artistic genres. Not only does it continue to be a medium of self-representation, self-stylization and self-reflection of the artist, but it also opened up the possibility to make the artwork in its specific existence the subject. This introductory seminar aims to show the different facets of meaning and function in the course of time using examples from the Early Middle Ages to the present, and it aims to raise the question of constants becoming visible behind these changes.

This course is assessed via continuous assessment and attendance is compulsory.
