summer semester 2017 | Last update: 22.12.2016 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of competences and a critical attitude in dealing with historical sources and representations of history as well as the ability to present the newly-acquired knowledge in oral and/or written form; acquisition of the competent use of relevant scholarly methods.
In this class we will read and discuss the new work of the Oxford historian, Peter Frankopan, The Silk roads (German ed. Berlin: Rowohlt Verlag, 2016, 939 pages). We will be especially interested in texts about modern and contemporary history and will see and analyze to what extent this book is truly „A New History of the World“ as suggested by the subtitle.
It is recommended that you have passed the courses Fundamentals of the History of Modern Times and Fundamentals of Contemporary History.
Reading, oral presentations and handout, paper, discussions; teacher's lecture.
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, regular and active participation in discussions, oral presentation and handout, paper (max. 5 pages).

The course consists of 13 one-hour lessons every Thursday of the semester, which will be held in two-hour blocks every two weeks. The first meeting of one hour to discuss the organization and technical details will be on March 9 2017, from 10:15 to 11:0; the rest of the course will take place in six two-hour sessions (from 10:15 – 11:45) on the following days: 23.3., 6.4., 4.5., 18.5., 8.6., 29.6.
