622012 Region and History: South Tyrol: Historical Cultures and Cultures of Remembrance in the South Tyrol Region
summer semester 2017 | Last update: 27.04.2017 | Place course on memo listAcquiring basic knowledge of cultures of remembrance within a regional space and its peculiar spatial sociology: becoming acquainted with the interdependence of politics and public space: developing individual research questions on the basis of the paradigm of remembrance. Discussing the interdependence between the micro- and macro-historical level.
The South Tyrolean region offers diverse, overlapping and sometimes contradictory elements and symbols of public memory in rare density. If one perceives the urban space as a container stuffed with social meaning, then many possibilities of historical insights reveal themselves. It becomes evident how much the presence of two dictatorial regimes – the Italian and the German fascism – has shaped this space in different ways up until today. They have spread a network of partly visible, partly hidden commemorative places over the region. Thus, interesting questions arise, if we look at the region taking into account the time preceding and succeeding these regimes, with the rise of antagonist nationalisms during the “long” 19th century, or if we compare todays practices and memorials and the cultures of remembrance in totalitarian states.
