understanding and awareness of the role played by the CEFR in foreign language teaching globally
understanding of how the CEFR characterises language use
familiarity with the CEFR levels and ability to differentiate them, understanding the criterial features in CEFR descriptors and progression between levels
the ability to critically evaluate CEFR levels as claimed by published materials
the competence to apply the CEFR in lesson planning & material development
the competence to reflect upon application and the oral and/or written presentation thereof
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has strongly influenced foreign language teaching, learning and assessment in Europe and indeed worldwide. In Austria, the CEFR levels form a central element of the foreign language curricula.
This course includes a background to the CEFR and its development and validation, the CEFR’s view of language use, as well as definition and illustration of the CEFR levels A1-C2.
The course also offers the opportunity to apply the CEFR in lesson planning and materials development. A range of CEFR-related resources (including online) will be presented and used. The recent development of new, additional descriptors by some of the CEFR authors will also be discussed.

Active participation in class, reading assignments, interactive presentation and/or simulation, reflective paper
