640014 Ancient History II: The Jewish Diaspora in the Hellenistic-Roman World
summer semester 2017 | Last update: 14.09.2023 | Place course on memo listThe students will acquire basic knowledge of philological text analysis, of epigraphy and papyrology as well as of the political and social history of Hellenism and the Roman empire. Having attended this course, students should be able to deal with primary sources and secondary literature on the Jewish diaspora in the Hellenistic-Roman world independently and to critically scrutinize the respective texts.
Based on reading primary sources and secondary literature the course will focus on the history of particular Jewish diasporic communities which are known from Hellenistic and Roman times. Furthermore, critical treatment of ancient texts and research literature will be practiced.
Primary sources and secondary literature on particular Jewish diasporic communities will be read, (if necessary) translated and discussed in detail; this will generate insights into the history of the respective community in Hellenistic or Roman times as well as into the underlying historiographic concepts of the texts.
Active participation in the class, (if necessary) independent reading and presentation of a seminar paper
This SE is also valid as SE for the Bachelor Thesis for students of the BA History (2009) respectively as SE Advanced topics in Ancient History for students of the BA History (2015) as well as a Workshop including Bachelor Thesis (focus on Ancient History) for students of the BA CleO (2009).
The course instructor will inform the participants about the particular workload.
