The aim of the course is to examine the multicultural phenomenon of Galicia by means of Galician literature and to provide an understanding of essential methodological approaches to the comparative analysis of texts written at different times about the same geopolitical, social and cultural space. It deals with the narrative of individual cultures of Galicia as well as their multilingual "common narrative", defined as "Galician text". Selected German texts and translations from Polish and Ukrainian will be analyzed. The focus is on comparative approaches, which are extended by spatial hermeneutics.

In the introductory lecture, historical Galicia and its multicultural heritage are interpreted as an exemplary field of investigation, which is more and more of interest because of the increasing heterogeneity of modern societies. The theoretical background and methodological approaches, the primary literature and the corresponding secondary literature will be introduced. The following topics are presented in short lectures by the lecturer and elaborated with the students in the form of presentations and discussion: I. Social space Galicia in the mirror of literature: The delayed modernization and its consequences. Galicia as a “transit space”. II. Heterogeneity vs. hybridity of the cultural space Galicia. III. The return and further life of Galicia as a culturally produced and a literary text.

Lectures and keynote speeches (held by the lecturer) as well students impulses (short presentations, discussion participation).

To complete the course the students have to prepare several keynote speeches. At the end of the semester a short paper (circumference about 10 pages) has to be written. In addition, the active participation in the discussions will be part of the rating.
