The Middle Ages can be regarded in many aspects as the age of the city. Above all in the High Middle Ages, many cities were founded and the typical image of the European city with walls, a central square or lane were coined. The cities themselves evolved into major political players and due to the manifold social dynamics they became seminal social formations.
