The history and culture of Italy, the silhouettes of its towns as well as the language were coined in the Middle Ages, a time in which Italy lead the way in many fields: the political systems of the city states, the legal system, the universities, economy and not least arts and literature are fields in which the Italian peninsula experienced developments which consequently would get influence on a European level. Special focus will be given to those times which lead to a particular cultural development. History of culture and literature will be placed in the context of political, social and economic developments.
