645621 Cultural Studies and Publicity: Collage City - urban anthropology research about the arts and the city
summer semester 2017 | Last update: 12.06.2017 | Place course on memo listThe participants gain insights into theoretical and methodological approaches to the research area „arts and the city“ and explore and develop their own research perspective.
Starting with the concept of „collage city“ introduced by Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter (1975) as a figure of thought to ask for the potentials of intervention and transformation of urban space, the course will focus on the specificity of artistic and cultural interventions.
How is the city produced as social space? Which conflicting powers are structuring the public space? And how can dominant ways of appropriation of urban space and dominant narrations be questioned and subverted? Which can be the role of artistic and cultural interventions in public space when understanding the city as a collectively shaped living space? How can artistic and cultural strategies intervene in and transform urban space?
After an introduction into theoretical approaches of researching the city as well as concepts of space, the course will follow by giving an introduction into artistic approaches to the city as well as methodological approaches of urban anthropology.
Selected methods will be explored in exercises and reflected in the course. In the following step the participants develop their own research questions and will write and present an exposé. Individual field research will be discussed and reflected in the course, based on which the participants write their term papers.
