Basic understanding and ability to apply elementary methods of data analysis.

  • Measurement results and their interpretation in terms of probabilities
  • Sources of uncertainties and error propagation
  • Statistical significance: Discovery or just an accidental result?
  • Data reduction: extraction of specific quantities from large data sets
  • Fitting of functions to experimental data
  • Linear regression
  • What exactly is the fit program doing?
  • chi^2 as central quantity
  • Correlation of fit parameters
  • Hypothesis testing: Does my model really describe the data?

Lecture with practical examples and exercises.

Final examination in one event (oral or written, depending on number of participants).

Measurements and their Uncertainties, Ifan G. Hughes and Thomas P. A. Hase (Oxford University Press).

No formal requirements, but lecture is only suited for students, who are already doing the basic lab course.

Highly recommended for students in the 4th semester, parallel to the basic lab course (GP1 and GP2). Lecture is also well suited as preparation for the advanced lab course (FP1).
