Graduates of this course should have gained basic knowledge and practical skills regarding programming, especially for applications towards physics' problems

Basic knwoledge and practical skills of programming C. Programming and applications designed specifically towards physics' problems and methods. Linux 101. Common programming techniques and style in natural sciences.

The course is held in a practical fashion with groups < 25 participants. In addition there is an accompanying lecture 706919 "Vorlesung begleitend zum PR2 Programmieren für Physiker" (VO1), which is recommended for all participants of this course to demonstrate the basics and fortify the understanding.

The completion of the STEOP is mandatory for all students who have first enrolled after or in winter term 2011/12, except for those starting their studies in summer term 2014. Newly inscribed students can and are encouraged to attend this course, especially considering the 30 ECTS that have to be completed in the first semester.

Please note that a practical course can consist of only one evaluation. In case of failure this course has to be redone completely in the next year.

This is a practical course with mandatory attendance. Due to the limited number of available slots, missed attendances in the first two weeks will lead to the loss of the reservation (bylaws §23 Abs. 4), unless important reasons are presented in written form. If the reservation is upheld beyond the first two weeks, this will count as attempt towards this course according to bylaws §23 Abs. 2.

During the course there will be a number of graded exercises combined with live demonstrations to assess the . There will also be 2 exams in the middle and at the end of the semester. 

As this is the first practical course in the curriculum, please note that preparation before each lession is mandatory and can be evaluated. Preparation is mostly possible with the provided materials from the accompanying lecture (available in OLAT), but also requires some self-learning and sometimes independent research! This will then be announced giving sufficient time.

This course is oriented towards methods in applied natural sciences and NOT toward Computational Science, meaning that applications have to follow the usual techniques and styles in natural sciences even though these appear unusual towards Computational Scientists. This is together with functionality one of the assessment criterias.

IF YOU HAVE PRESSING REASONS, WHY YOU CANNOT PARTICIPATE IN ONE OF THE MORNING GROUPS TUESDAYS, PLEASE LET US KNOW BY THE 21st OF FEBRUARY. Even then, we cannot guarantee participation in one of the afternoon groups. Excess participants will be randomly distributed amog the other groops trying to comply with your wishes.
