The lecture provides an overview of the origin and sedimentology of carbonate rocks. The practical part is dedicated to attaining basic skills of how to classify carbonate rocks in slab and thin section.
Basic characteristics of carbonate systems - components and classification of carbonate rocks - carbonate shelves and brief outline of reef evolution - peritidal cycles - carbonate diagenesis - drowning of reefs and carbonate platforms

Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).

Written, one hour
