Measurement and Fundamentals of Experimental Techniques

Participants of this module acquire a deep understanding of measurement techniques and instruments. They are able to independently study and understand advanced aspects of measurement techniques and experimental methods. They are prepared for experimental scientific research.

mass spectromety, mass analysers, ion detectors, ionization methods; lasers, principles, laser types; laser spectroscopy, in particular in ion physics; surface analysis tools, scanning probe techniques, scanning tunneling microscope, atomic force microscope, applications in molecular and ion physics; electronic data acquisition;

The lecture combines chalk with screen presentations. Students acquire a deeper understanding of the topics by reading original research and review articles, which are provided for download. Students work with original data sheets of scientific instruments and learn to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the different types. A list of questions gives guidelines in this process. Problems sheets for calculation and discussion enable students to actively use the acquired knowledge on problems in research and applications.
