608122 PS Core Areas of Linguistics:
winter semester 2017/2018 | Last update: 26.01.2018 | Place course on memo listThe students are able to reproduce deepended knowledge of a special area of German linguistics and can work scientifically and independently on a certain topic.
This pro-seminar will deal with the sound system and the writing system of German, focussing especially on their mutual interdependence.
The core of interest in this pro-seminar will be the reciprocal interrelation between the spoken and the written aspect of the German language. After a general introduction to the topic, we will first consider spoken sounds and analyse their physical and functional aspects on a segmental as well as on a suprasegmental level in different varieties of spoken standard German. We will then situate the German writing system in a global typology of writing systems against the backdrop of its historical development. Subsequently, we will turn to its material and functional aspects and investigate its complex relations with sound, meaning, and grammar. Dealing with these topics, we will not only use accepted standard models of German linguistics, but also discuss recent and controversial developments in relevant research.
