Ability to understand academic literature about literacy and literacy-related social practices and to reflect relevant issues critically; competence to read topic-related scientific texts and analyse texts and utterances according to the methods of different linguistic disciplines; ability to write a term paper that meets academic standards

Literacy is an integrate part of our daily life. It is not only closely related  to contexts of teaching and learning, but also to information and communication technologies, globalisation, multilingualism and social diversity. As such, it is a central component of social practices.

In this seminar we will deal with a range of aspects of literacy and literacy-related social practices: the oral-literal continuum, graphemics, orthography and grapho-stilistic variation, writing in information and communication technologies, written language in space, social participation and the pedagogy of Multiliteracies. We will reflect our own reading and writing practices, but will also critically discuss  the role of literacy-related competencies and practices in contexts of learning and daily life.
