They are able to discuss the basic interplay of language, media and politics, and succeed in applying basic methods of linguistic media and communication analysis.
Fake news, alternative facts, populism, nationalism – language, media and politics are on everybody’s lips at the moment. It seems as if it is about time to address this topic in more detail! “Politolinguistics” as a subdomain of linguistics has been attending to language and politics for several decades now. Within the course, students will gain basic knowledge of politolinguistic theory and methods, in order to challenge and analyse language in politics on linguistic grounds. The course will cover traditional forms of political communication (e.g. political posters, party programs, speeches before parliament etc.) as well as new forms online (e.g. social networks, microblogs, video sharing sites etc.).
