609562 Synchronic and/or Diachronic English Linguistics:
winter semester 2017/2018 | Last update: 02.10.2017 | Place course on memo listunderstanding the nature and dimensions of language, in particular its diachronic aspects
proficiency: improvement of the student's knowledge and command of the English language in all its aspects
Two literary greats are known to have had a considerable influence on the development of the English language, one being William Shakespeare known for his knowledge of little Latin and lesse Greek and the other being Geoffrey Chaucer, who as diplomat and translator was known to have spoken several languages.
We might assume that Chaucer‘s multilingualism is largely responsible for the innovations Chaucer introduced into the English language and subsequently adopted by publishers like Caxton. So Chaucer can be seen as an instigator of language change.
We shall use the reading of Chaucer‘s Canterbury Tales to gain insight both into Chaucer‘s multilingual background and his use of English..
