609563 Synchronic and/or Diachronic English Linguistics: Metaphor in Language and Thought
winter semester 2017/2018 | Last update: 13.09.2017 | Place course on memo listParticipants will be able to understand conceptual metaphors and their role in everyday language as well as developing skills to identify and analyse metaphors.
As opposed to the traditional view that metaphor is a device of poetic imagination and rhetoric, cognitive linguistics considers metaphor as not only a matter of language but also thought and action. Recent studies in the field show that metaphor is pervasive in our everyday language. That is, our conceptual system in terms of which we both think and act is largely metaphorical. Therefore, our focus will be a cognitive one, through which we will explore the relationship between figurative thought and language in a number of texts and media from various fields such as discourse, literature, advertisements, and so on. In addition, this course will also look into conceptual metonymy and conceptual blending in order to better analyse and identify these concepts.
At the beginning of the course, an introduction to the topic and examples will be provided to establish the framework of the course.
Regular attendance (attendance to the 1st session is compulsory), participation in discussions, oral presentation and seminar paper.
