640009 PS Ancient History: Of Gods and Men - Sanctuaries in Archaic and Classical Greece
winter semester 2017/2018 | Last update: 13.11.2017 | Place course on memo listThe acquisition of basic skills in dealing with sources and literature, especially in ancient history.
Greek sanctuaries are focal points of both religious and social life. As multifunctional public spaces, sanctuaries form the framework for cultic ceremonies and athletic festivals for local communities as well as supraregional crowds of pilgrims, turn out to be sites for the display of cities and elites via representative votive offerings, constitute neutral, but nevertheless eminently political zones for interstate treaties, and are, at the same time, highly regularized institutions, businesses and banks. In case studies coming from various literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources we want to deal with both the religious and more mundane functions of sanctuaries in Archaic and Classical Greece. On a more general level the course is meant to be an introduction to the sources, methodological approaches, and tools in ancient history.
Combination of lecture, guided reading, and group work.
Exercises, participation, written paper.
Relevant literature will be announced during the course.
Online registration, maximum up to 25 participants.
