Broadening and deepening of general knowledge by dealing with exemplary topics, i.e. societies and languages of the Middle East and the Mediterranean as well as their interactions.

(I) Muslim conquest, pre-Ottoman Turks/Muslims, Ottomans until the 16th centrury, Ottoman-Byzantine synthesis, the Millet system; military and feudal institutions.

(II) the 16th century - the Ottoman Empire as European and Muslim Power (competition with Austria and Iran);  Kanuni Sultan Süleyman and his age as a constituent element of modern Turkish identity (instrumentalised history in modern Turkey under Erdogan)  the "lale devri" (Age of the Tulips) Ideology: califate and Kizilbalsh

(III) The long 19th centruy: nationalism and the Millet system, Greece and the Balkans, the "tanzimat" reforms, imperialism and the "capitulations", Abdulhamit and the young Turks

(IV) The end of Kurdish self-rule, the Armenian question, Arabs in the Ottoman Empire, the Great War; the war of independence and the founding of the Turkish Republic; final thoughts: How to write (about) Ottoman History?
