In this course, the students will start by getting to know the general structure of a publishing house. In a second step we will take a more specific look at international literature in German publishing houses: Which books are translated? Who proposes them? How are they chosen? What are the criteria for a good translation?

We will learn about how a publishing house works and focus on the role played by international literature.

From the manuscript to the book release. What is the significance of translated international literature within German publishing houses? Which books are translated and why? From which languages? What can a publishing house do to make international literature successful?

Besides answering these questions we will practise writing evaluations and editing texts.

Lectures and keynote speeches (held by the lecturer) will explain the structure and workings of a publishing house. Documentary film material will explore the process of writing and getting a book published. We will discuss general questions about translations and learn about how to edit them. Further we will practise writing assessments of books in learning groups.

To complete the course the students have to take part in learning groups  working on translations. At the end of the semester a short paper (of about 3 - 4 pages)  has to be written. Active participation in the discussions and in correcting translations will contribute tot he final grade.

A list will be sent at the beginning of the course.
