Students acquire an overview of selected, more recent theoretical-methodical approaches and themes in cultural geography. This includes learning the differences between the perspectives of cultural geography and "new cultural geography" in the Anglo-American and German language space ("Neue Kulturgeographie") and also embraces more recent cross-sectional approaches to human geography. The lecture raises awareness on the multiplicity of perspectives and discusses their potentials and limits to understanding the relation of humans, societies and space and to analysing socio-political (power)structures and processes in space.

  1. Cultural geography, "new cultural geography", new cross-sectional approaches to human geography
  2. Discourse, power and space (poststructuralism and discourse-theoretical approaches)
  3. Imaginative geographies and hybrid identities (postcolonial geographies)
  4. Body and performativity (non-representational approaches and geographies of performativity)
  5. Diversity and difference (geographies of encounter and difference)
  6. Gender and space (feminist and post-feminist geographies)
