Students possess well-founded knowledge of the basic and current theoretical concepts about relationships between work and age.

Demographic developments (decline in fertility rates, increase in life expectancy and their implications) have an impact of labors supply reduction. Another problem is the early retirement. The trend of population ageing reflects on the challenges to retain older workers longer in their jobs. This seminar deals with psychological issues connectit with (1) problems of participation, employment and  unemployment rates, (2) reasons for non employment of older workers, (3)

falling retirement ages, (4) old age pension systems.  Based on current scientifical papers (in English and German) students present ans discuss for example topics like:  (a) Do older workers cost more?

(b) Are older workers less productive? (c) Substitution between old and young workers

 (d) The realisation of active ageing (e) employability of older workers, (f) the role of lifelong learning, (g) Public and enterprise policies.
