The course aims at students of master study programs interested in the culture of Latin America and Spain (without any prior knowledge of Spanish).

The main objectives are to make students aware of the interaction between self-image and the image of the "other" and to sensitize them to the multi-faceted aspects of culture-specific communication.

Upon completion of the course, students have mastered a series of useful Spanish phrases and are familiar with simple communication situations. They understand the basic characteristics of the Spanish / Lain-American language area and are able to employ simple (speech) acts to form a communication basis with this culture.

What does intercultural competence mean? Reflection on and interaction with self-image and the image of the "other" in the context of the cultural region of Latin American and Spain.

Additionally, students are familiarized with the basic rules of social behavior (greeting rituals, body language, proximity and distance, concept of time, which topics to embrace and which to avoid, etc.)

Moreover, basic vocabulary and grammar for simple communication situations are trained.

Selected examples (along with films from Spain and Latinamerika, exercises, and role plays) are used to make students reflect on and deepen their understanding of intercultural communication.

Group work, intercultural games, discussions, presentations, communicative language training.

Performance is evaluated as follows: active participation (25%), presentation (50%) and final self-reflection (25%).

The necessary literature is made available on OLAT.

The course is aimed at Master Students with no previous knowledge of the Spanish language, who are interested in this cultural and economic area.
