930004 Gender Relations in Migration Societies
winter semester 2017/2018 | Last update: 27.10.2017 | Place course on memo listTo gain knowledge about the material and symbolic conditions under which gender becomes a relevant category of difference in migration societies. In this seminar, a specific focus will be on the female side of this issue.
This seminar deals with the gender-specific aspects of migration and integration from a Migration and Refugee Studies perspective. It examines the migration and flight experiences of women caused by the gendered division of labour (keywords: feminization of migration, globalised service economy, marriage migration, trafficking of women, etc.). At the same time, it deals with the plurality of female migration and flight motives such as living conditions in the country of origin as well as the country of destination. The underlying objective is to understand that female migration strategies are no longer restricted to a place. Female migration nowadays requires and promotes transnational biographies and entails new integration challenges (keyword: new domestic care workers).
Introduction to the topic by the lecturer; paper reading and discussing; definition of a research question for a small research project; presentation of the first results; joint development of criteria for the term paper.
Comprehensive presentation (in the course of the seminar) OR term paper: Presentation of the relevant literature studied throughout the seminar including handouts for the other students OR development of a small research proposal and elaboration of the developed research question in the term paper.
We will begin the seminar by reading the special issue of the Österreichischen Zeitschrift für Soziologie (16/2016) on “Geschlechterverhältnisse der Migrationsgesellschaft“. Additional reading material will be provided at the beginning of and throughout the seminar.
