BA Political Science § 5 (2) 4 a European Integration - Introduction

Students are able to explain the functionality and differentiation of the political system of the EU. They discuss and answer questions illustrated by individual organs and institutions of internal and institutional decision-making processes and the characteristics of individual political fields.

This lecture intends to provide an in-depth overview on the political and institutional system of the European Union. It concentrates on the EU’s analysis as a dynamic multi-level system by examining interinstitutional relations and procedures with regard to their horizontal and vertical dimensions. Special attention will be drawn on the horizontal relations between the European Parliament and the other EU institutions (European Council, Council, Commission…) as well as on the vertical relations between the Council of Ministers (and its sub-structures) and the government bodies in the EU member states.
